When should a scaffold be inspected?

How long can I have the scaffold for?

We incorporate 6-8 weeks of hire, depending on the project. Anything thereafter is stated in the quote and with the hire charge. Essentially we're flexible and can advise you on any inspection requirements for longer-term hire.

Do you work to TG2021 standards and how do I know if they apply to my project?

Our team are able to work to all current regulations and standards. We're fully accredited and through our on-site visit and quote process can advise you on compliance and which regulations apply to your project.

Scaffolding design requirements

Scaffolding Design: Understanding requirements and compliance with TG2021 guidelines

TG2021 is a set of rules created by the National Access & Scaffolding Confederation (NASC) to make sure that everyone who uses tube and fitting scaffolding follows the same good practices. The aim of these rules is to provide a lot of different scaffolding structures that can be used without needing to design them from scratch.

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 states that if a scaffold is not assembled to a standard configuration, such as NASC Technical Guidance TG20 for tube and fitting scaffolds or similar guidance from manufacturers’ instructions for system scaffolds, then the scaffold must be designed by bespoke calculation and by a competent person. This means that the scaffold must be designed specifically for the job and by someone who knows what they are doing.

If your requirements fall within the basic compliance (TG-2021), then standardised design criteria compliance can be provided. This means that if your needs are simple and straightforward, then there are standard designs that can be used to meet your needs. These designs will meet certain requirements such as height and maximum dimensions, leg load, ties required etc.

If your chimney stack is not under basic compliance (TG-2021), then a structural designer will assess and ensure correct edge protection, support, facade supports - heavy-duty scaffolding. This means that if your chimney stack is more complicated than the standard designs, then a structural designer will look at what you need and make sure that the scaffolding is strong enough to support it.

Information to provide for scaffolding design

At the start of the planning process

  1. Site location, period of time the scaffold is required to be in place, intended use.
  2. Height and length and any critical dimensions which may affect the scaffold, number of boarded lifts, maximum working loads to be imposed and maximum number of people using the scaffold at any one time.
  3. Type of access onto the scaffold eg staircase, ladder bay, external ladders, whether there is a requirement for sheeting, netting or brickguards, any specific requirements or provisions eg pedestrian walkway, restriction on tie locations, inclusion/provision for mechanical handling plant eg hoist.
  4. Nature of the ground conditions or supporting structure, information on the structure/building the scaffold will be erected against together with any relevant dimensions and drawings, any restrictions that may affect the erection, alteration or dismantling process.

Prior to the installation

  1. Type of scaffold (tube and fitting or system).
  2. Maximum bay lengths, maximum lift heights, platform boarding arrangement and the number of boarded lifts that can be used at any one time.
  3. Safe working load/load class, maximum leg loads, maximum tie spacing both horizontal and vertical and tie duty.
  4. Details of additional elements such as beamed bridges, fans, loading bays etc., which may be a standard configuration or specifically designed.
  5. Information in relevant drawings if appropriate and any other information relevant to the design, installation or use of the scaffold.
  6. Reference number, date etc. to enable recording, referencing and checking.

Safety requirements for scaffolding

Health & safety: SG4 ‘Preventing falls in scaffolding operations’ safety guidance document

SG4 ‘Preventing falls in scaffolding operations’ is a safety guidance document that provides industry best practice for fall prevention when erecting tube & fitting and now also includes system scaffolding. The document provides guidance on how to erect, dismantle and alter scaffolding in a safe manner.

For scaffolds that fall outside the scope of a generally recognised standard configuration the design must be such that safe erection and dismantling techniques can also be employed throughout the duration of the works. Where this is the case, specific instructions may need to be provided with the design. Any proposed modification or alteration that takes a scaffold outside the scope of a generally recognised standard configuration must be designed by a competent person and proven by calculation
